Chipotle serves grass fed meats

I recently went in to grab a meat bol from my local Chipotle and noticed a sign that read something about "Meat with Integrity." After researching it a little I found out that Chipotle restaurants use Niman Ranch and free range meats in all of their products. Their pricing is pretty good, food is very good, and now I know that they are using good meats and vegeatables for their food. Not that I eat out very often but when I do I will be sure to keep my eyes open for a Chipotle Restaurant.

By the way, you can order a "Bol" that comes without tortilla but make sure you ask for light rice because they seriously put about 5 cups worth in there!

Wasn’t Chipotle originally a subsidiary of McDonalds?

I am not too sure about now; I heard they branched off or something.

Nick,
That is good to know. There is one right next to the Barnes and Noble bookstore that I frequent.

Yes, they were originally majority owned by McDonald's, but aren't anymore to my knowledge.

Re: Chipotle serves grass fed meats

I lived in Denver area (Chipotle HQ) for eight years...if memory serves; in a nutshell - McD's bought into Chipotle around 10 years ago and over the course of a decade had the majority share of the company. Due to McD big footprint Chipotle was able to expand rapidly. IPO was approx two years ago and as of sometime last year McD's divested all interest in the company. If I remember correctly as McD's was phasing out...natural meat stared appearing in Chipotle...hmmm. I know that they only had natural pork for a while, then chicken. Don't live in Denver anymore - did not realize the beef was natural now as well.

Also, beware those burritos pack in 1000 calories or more (plus a tone of bad carbs) if you are not careful.

They also put beans and rice and wheat/corn products. So asking for a bowl of meat and pico de gallo with guacamole doesn't go over too well if you are a paleo eater. I know I've tried.

I have the same problem with a lot of restaurants like this, which on the surface appear to be Paleo-malleable. But good luck getting them to sub half the items, especially when you are asking for more expensive ingredients (more meat or guac in place of rice & cheese, for example).

I couldn't pick out in there where it says they use grass fed or free-range beef.

Re: Chipotle serves grass fed meats

One thing I have to point out, this is important:

Free-range (and Niman Ranch, for that matter) does NOT mean they are grass-fed!!!

Grass-fed means they are grass-fed. Free-range means that the cow's feet touch the ground once a day, that's about it. They are fed grains, plain and simple. I've bought Niman Ranch before, never have I seen a mention of grass-fed on their products.

If you don't see grass-fed ("range-fed" is another one meant to pull the wool over your eyes, the cows eat grains "on the range"!) listed on the menu/label, it is NOT grass-fed.

Re: Chipotle serves grass fed meats

Good point Garrett, and keep in mind that there is almost no oversight that can touch the needs of the industry. There are constantly cases where 'certified' has to be questioned: by whom? when? and how often is it tested? Certified organic Halal or Kosher meats are the choice, but even then you are taking the word of you purveyor if its a major brand. If you can get into a coop that buys meat from an individual farm, GO FOR IT! It's your best chance at getting what nature intended.

cheers,

Chef
