Has anyone read this new book? I have been browsing, and am impressed with the authors' (Alwyn Cosgrove and Lou Schuler) approach so far.

They say that there are essentially six basic human movements that we ought to try to replicate in the weightroom: the deadlift, the squat, the push, the pull, the lunge, and the twist. These, they argue, are the fundamental movements that we evolved to be able to do.

I think these guys would love Cindy and Chelsea especially. Three out of their basic six are represented.

Thats actually how i convince people to train with free weights instead of machines at my gym!

I describe those basic movements and then point out that the leg extension isn't one of them and tell them to avoid the machines.

Seems to work fairly well (BTW i've never read the book)

Lou Schuler has a Male Pattern Fitness blog. Good stuff on there. He commented on Crossfit after the NY Times article, in fact. And of course incorrectly thought the article was factual. A snippet from his Dec 22 2005 post...

So for an exercise system to provoke that kind of near-death experience (ed: rhabdo) ... well, we're talking about something that's probably a lot of fun, aren't we? The key is that it's only safe for a small and very, very fit minority of exercisers...}

Never heard of Schuler but Cosgrove is a regular contributor to a site that views Crossfit as a threat to marketshare. I doubt they'd be big fans of any of 'the girls' or anything else around here. Sure, all six of those things are great to focus on in training.

When I saw that he was going to contribute to Men's Health I was surprised......but ended up checking out his monthly training sections (for amusement)......and as I expected,..he provided fine workouts that I'm sure the MH's folk don't fully appreciate

Alwyn Cosgrove is the real deal and has a special ability to simply rip programs apart. He is also very funny, so as he makes fun of the 3-5 sets of 15-25 reps of lunges with 90 seconds rest (each leg), he makes you wonder how stupid you are with training, too. The guy knows his stuff.

Men's Health has some good stuff. They had articles on Overhead Squats and Romanian Deadlifts probably around 2001 or 2000 and they provide a lot of good information on things like Heart Disease et al that really go against what you hear in a typical magazine. I don't get a nickel for saying this...and the ONLY place I get money from is T-nation, everything else is free...but I always pick up Men's Health at the airport on flights. It fits my attention span perfectly on a flight. (I also read Dirk Pitt books, T. H. White and a few others).

So, I guess I'm saying that mainstream stuff has a lot of value. The reason I pop blueberries into many of my meals is from an article I read about five years ago in some defunct magazine like "Mind Muscle and Power" maybe that talked about the next wave of supplements and they noted that they would all be in the fruit and veggie aisle...I think it was coffee, blueberries, olive oil and salmon...I don't think I have the list any more...

The best part of Alwyn Cosgrove is his skill in saying you need to sit back and look at the "numbers." If you do 10,000 Bench Presses in a month and one row, for example...you are going to have joint issues.

Cool.... I'd mentioned Men's Fitness once on this forum and some XFit cultists said 'What the heck you reading Men's Fitness for?' (Sorry I'll make sure I NEVER read on outside training source again!)... I mentioned Cosgrove and the way he cuts to the core of essential movement training. Good stuff.

Thumbs up to the Cussler books, Dan. Popular fiction seldom gets more entertaining.
