Re: No grains/no sugar and sleep problems?

yes I know it seems obvious. But darnit if I don't love that caffeine boost. I'm sure cavemen would've had a latte if presented with the option.

Re: No grains/no sugar and sleep problems?

When I am off wheat and sugar I sleep through the night; when I am on them, I wake up; the more I'm on them the more I wake up (and more bathroom breaks).

They also wouldn't have said no to Big Macs.

Maya and Chris --

You both might want to up your fat intake. Sometimes when I have hunger that just won't stop, I know I'm low on the fat. Some cheese and grapes, apples and peanut butter, or some fatty protein -- bacon as a midnight snack -- sets me right again. It's not strict paleo, but it helps.

Chris -- I'm an Americano junkie so I know where you're coming from.

Agreed. The consensus I have gotten says that sleep problems are often associated with over training and lack of dietary fat.

Are you following Cordain's Paleo? If you are eating skinless chicken, try eating the skin...have more eggs in the morning if you are limiting them...eat leftovers with some canola mayonnaise (or whatever home made one you have)

Obviously there are a lot of other things you can do to try and up your fat.

Hi Maya,

I don't know if it's 'normal', but I wanted to validate your experience. I was off sugars and grains from April 1st to April 18th, and every single one of those nights I woke up at least once. The first night I went back to my usual diet I slept through the night and have every night since.

I wasn't eating much in the way of sugar/grain before I took them out, but I definitely noticed a difference in my sleep patterns.

And regarding the fat as others have suggested, I was eating 40 to 50% fat, mostly from nuts, and animal sources.

Re: No grains/no sugar and sleep problems?

I've upped the fat and reduced caffeine. ( one drink a day in the morning). I have slept well the last 3 nights!

Maya: how's it working for you? have the suggestions helped?

Re: No grains/no sugar and sleep problems?

Sorry guys, just catching up on the posts. Had a big tournament this past weekend so I haven't been online for a bit :P The tournament was exhausting so I have been sleeping soundly for the past few days haha, but I'm going back to my regular schedule this week so we'll see.

I'll try increasing the fat content, but I'm not as lean as I'd like to be and I thought that you're only really supposed to increase the fat % when you've reached a certain body fat % and/or overreaching?

Thanks for the support/advice everyone!! On a somewhat related note, I stuck to Paleo during the actual tournament and felt so much better (I usually end up eating starchy stuff or mis-time meals due to competing all day)! Love this stuff
