Herniated disk/cortisone shot question...

On August 20th of this year I injured my back at work. I have done physical therapy and I’m on Flexeril, Tramadol and ibuprofen. On Thursday I went back to my workmen’s comp doctor and he told me he does not recommend getting cortisone shots because it “hides” the pain and when I get cleared to go back to work my back will still be injured. I have not had an mri because my workmen’s comp will not pay for it unless I want to have back surgery. I have been told by my physical therapist and three doctors I most likely have a herniated disk. My question is if I should get a cortisone shot or just let it heal by itself like my doctor recommends? My pain level is around a 4 most days. Thanks!

Re: Herniated disk/cortisone shot question...

You mention that you have done physical therapy. Are you still doing it??

I ruptured my L5/S1 almost 2 years ago exactly. The first few months were very difficult. When I started doing physical therapy (and REALLY sticking to the exercises - many times per day, everyday), my pain started to go away.

2 years later and I'm almost symptom free. I still get numbness in the achilles and foot, but no more pain.

I was scheduled to get the injection, but I'm glad I didn't.

Re: Herniated disk/cortisone shot question...

I finished my pt. I'm still doing my stretching and using the h-wave machine on my back at home. I did 12 weeks if pt going twice a week...
