Different Pull-up Bar Question...

I want to mount pull-up bars to the wall. I'm looking for feedback on how high they should be so that a fairly tall person can hang fully without touching the ground. Is 9' high enough? Also, since they will be mounted to the wall, I need some feedback as to how far the bar should be from the wall. Especially for a tall person doing kipping pull-ups. I think less room would be needed if you kip facing away from the wall (but you need some space so you don't smack your gourd on the wall). Thanks!

Re: Different Pull-up Bar Question...

Mine is 3' away and it is plenty of room. 9' should be high enough unless NBA athletes are coming over. 9' might be too high for a lot of people.

Re: Different Pull-up Bar Question...

My roof is 9 feet from the ground and my pull up bar hangs down 12" from there. I have to either jump or use my plyo box to get up to it and I am 6'2" if thats any help.

Re: Different Pull-up Bar Question...

Thanks guys. So at least 8' is a good height? With 3' from the wall no one is hitting the wall on kipping pull-ups?

Re: Different Pull-up Bar Question...

I currently have 8 feet hight. its a bit too tall for most in my opinion. When i do it again, the average height will be 7 or 7 1/2. I find that we have a lot more instance of people needing high box to get on to the pull up bar than the taller people that feel 8' height is good for them.

Re: Different Pull-up Bar Question...

Erik,

All of the pullup rigs we build are either 8' for the most part. Like James said the 7.5' marker would do for most. We only have one guy in our gym that hits his feet with the 8' rig we have at Rogue.

The 3' span from the wall seems to work out perfect for kipping. Ahmik Jones is the one that looked into the optimal distance for kipping and now that is our standard.

We also use 1" steel tube which has an OD of 1.25" for the bar itself.

Hope that helps

Bill

Re: Different Pull-up Bar Question...

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the info. I know a 6'4" guy that I will probably have hang from a bar and see how much clearance he has. I might have a couple stations with a slightly larger diameter bar also. I like the thicker bars myself, but I do have to consider the smaller hands of kids and women as well.
