My Performance Testing Results at McMaster University

Hey guys, just wanted to share the following. I went to McMaster University today with my Exercise Science class, and we did a Wingate test, VO2 test, and Bod Pod test, all 3 of which I managed to fit myself into. I have trained specifically anaerobically for the past 2 years, so I was really impressed with the aerobic carryover.

VO2 Max Test
VO2 Max: 55.3 (ml/kg/min) (I think the woman said that 50+ is in the 90th percentile, and she once saw someone get a 70)
Heart Rate Max: 202 (BPM) (Not sure if this shows anything important, but threw it in here anyways)

It was on a bike, started at 50 watts of resistance(?), and after 2 minutes, increased 1 watt every two seconds. I lasted 12:30.

Wingate Test
*I am unsure of as to how accurate this is, because I was a little fatigued from VO2 about 20 minutes earlier, and 7 seconds into the Wingate, she stopped me and told me the machine froze and I had to restart, which meant I only had 2 minutes to recover from 10 seconds all out.**

30 Seconds
Torque Factor: 0.7 (Nm/Kg) (I weigh 62kg)
Torque: 43.40 (Nm)
Max Power: 685.91 (Watts)
Avg. Power: 551.93 (Watts)
Min. Power: 238.84 (Watts)
Total Work: 16557.83 (Joules)
Rate of Fatigue: 65.18%
RPM Start: 102.55
RPM Max: 150.55

Bod Pod Body Composition Test
Fat %: 11.3%
Thoracic Gas Volume 2.932 L (Not sure if this means anything)
Body Volume: 57.487 L
Body Density: 1.073 Kg/L

Overall, it was a super fun day, and very cool to do these tests.

Would have been good to have some pre crossfit numbers. Perhaps see if you can go get tested again in a year time to see differences.

He's 16 years old so all bets are off on that. Teenagers are moving targets!

HA! I started Crossfit at 14, and had no mentality of not quitting, so I would have given up so early into the test.

If it helps though, I got 10.5 on the beep test my first time doing it, about 2 weeks before beginning WODs after school with my coach.

Re: My Performance Testing Results at McMaster University

We also do plenty of VO2 max tests and I have been able to test many Pro hockey players and many of them have a VO2 of less than 55. ml/kg/min. VO2 is movement specific. I other words, you might get a great score on the treadmill but a lousy score on the bike. I find most bike protocols to be quite taxing on the legs and in fact I feel that my legs give out long before my lungs do and therefore score lower on a bike test. You coaches comment regarding heavy metcons could reflect this.
Your lower score on the Wingate is more likely a reflection of your size your aptitude with the test. After a few practice tries I'm sure you could increase that. Your fatigue index might suffer a bit, though. Now that you know your max RPM, try to start closer to that so you are not hitting it 3-5 seconds into the test.
