older folks new to exercise and anyone with a history of heart disease should use a monitor. other than that, any healthy person is fine without one. the lactate threshold will prevent you from continuing past what your heart can handle. the reason you see athletes train w/one is so they can hum along just below thier anaerobic threshold, which keeps them at thier peak perfornmance without blowing a (lactate threshold) gasket. they know if they go over thier "majic" number they will hit the wall and performance will drop off. exercising to heart failure is only a possibility if you are predisposed.

I have checked my heart rate from time to time when I had that I'm going to die feeling. Been as high as 198 and I'm 44. My theoretical MAX HR is 176.
On days I push that hard it stays elevated somewhat for hours. Usually it's a "for time" workout that hits me really hard FRAN, Mary, etc. |
