First of all, use Craigslist. It's your friend. Here's a rundown of things I've gotten:

I got all of the following from a Gold's Gym via Craigslist -- they had done some remodeling and had stuff to get rid of:

Precor club quality treadmill
Rubber floor matting: ~300 sf 1/2" thick
Dumbbell pairs, from 15-60LB
2x 9' long dumbbell racks
Total: $400

The rest got from various sources:

375LB rubber-coated free weights (barely used): $75 (worth about $600 easy!)
Home-made pullup bar from 2"x6" / plumbing pipe: >$50
Home made 'slam ball': >$20
Crossfit bar: $145 (only thing I bought 'new')
Squat Rack/Weight tree: $25

About 500+SF of Swain Gold premium wrestling mats (for martial arts/bjj): $1100
125LB 6' Heavy Bag: I think $100

Still to go: Concept 2 rower, bumper plates, and I'm making a sandbag out of a duffle bag/sand.

I got most of this stuff as an absolute STEAL from Craigslist... just be diligent and patient.

The main area is 12' x 13' and is where most of the workouts take place. The other area is about 7' x 12' and that's where the treadmill, rower, GHD, boxes, etc are either stored or used.

I started out with what I though was most important and then just added over time. The squat rack, since I lift by myself was the first. I also do all my pullups from it. Then bumpers and a bar were next, followed by rings and boxes. I don't have a lot of room but there's just enough to do the workouts.

Re: Cost for Home Gym?

The GHD came from NY Barbells. Not the most well put together piece of equipment but it was cheap and gets the job done. I can't begin to count how many gallons of sweat and some blood I have left down there while enjoying every minute of it.

Re: Cost for Home Gym?

I took the fast way out and bought the starter kit, plus plyobox, on www.crossfitequipment.com for around $1k. From there, I've added rubber mats for $160, built a pull up station for three with a spot for rings ($100), good jump rope($20) and a couple regular 45# plates ($50) I have ordered squat rack and bench ($350)

Total Approximately $1600+

www.crossfitequipment.com was easy to deal with.

Unfortunately, I still can't completely give up my globo-gym membership -- mainly because globo gym has a childcare area, and my wife is not a crossfitter.

Once my kids are a bit older and more self-sufficient, I may be able to give up the membership. (Also, I still don't have a C2 rower (and the globo-gym does -- albeit only *one* vastly underused one...). I'm hoping to correct this year, $$$ permitting.

Wow -- and they offer self-assembled plyo boxes for cheap! THAT is a golden find... thanks! I think I'll be ordering myself up some of those, because I suck with tools.

Any attempt to make a plyobox would likely end up looking like coatrack -- that was hit by a truck and mauled by angry, coatless wolverines.

That's all I could make in shop when I was in school.

Shop instructor: "That was supposed to be a lamp."
Me: "Well, now it's a coat rack. Real men aren't afraid of the dark."
