Butterfly Kip Help
So I got the butterfly kip...sort of. My problem is that I lose rhythm. I can't tell if its because my knees are way pulled up at the end of the movement, or if its just a timing thing, but I lose it everytime 3-4 reps in.
Any ideas? Sorry for the random old dude... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeKSQC9m-xE Eric |

Re: Butterfly Kip Help
I can't tell you what to concentrate on to fix it, but I can pick out some things... The movement is slightly different than what I know as the 'BFK.' Your movement is almost a hybrid - more horizontal movement and much slower than a "standard" BFK. Try to go faster, in my experience the butterfly develops as you are pressed for speed. At the rate in the video you could be doing a traditional kip with the same speed. With that said, everyone kips differently, so w/e.

Re: Butterfly Kip Help
Gotta get the knees back faster. You also have to pull faster and more explosive otherwise there's no time to get the knees back faster.
BFK does have somewhat of a strength requirement due to this, and you may not have the strength/explosiveness to pull it off correctly yet. But keep practicing at it; for your workouts I'd stick with regular kipping (or whatever you do) for now. |

Re: Butterfly Kip Help
Practice a little more. That's how it usually starts off. Give yourself a couple more weeks.
And get those knees back/heels up as Steven pointed out! |

Re: Butterfly Kip Help
When I saw the lat pulldowns I was going to say "well there's your problem... how are you supposed to BFK that thing?" nyuk

Re: Butterfly Kip Help
To me it looked like that bar wasn't high enough off the ground. Remember that initial video with Mike G from Atlanta talking about the butterfly kips? He says one thing he thinks about it paddling the air as the kip occurs. In my opinion, you won't get the full effect unless your knees are fully extended when the foot is closest to the ground. Angular momentum relies on the length (and weight) of the segment, and your legs are very heavy (one leg weighs much more than both arms). If you shorten the segment then it will be easier to stop, and to me it seems like that stopping the angular momentum would be the worst thing you could do in a butterfly kip.
I think if you could extend your knees on a higher bar, you'd feel a difference. And by the way, I had the BFK down pretty well, yet still perfecting it. Then today I did Angie and I didn't feel fluid. I think it was because I didn't do a warm-up set prior, but I still agree with the rest of the guys in suggesting more practice. Good luck. |
