Re: Nut butters

What's wrong with peanut butter? The stuff I buy is only peanuts and salt. Nothing else.

Re: Nut butters

Paleo is about reducing omega 6 intake as well as removing items that might cause gut irritation. If no nut butters is a deal breaker then enjoy your almond butter but in actuality it' not the best stuff in the world to eat.

honestly 85% or higher dark chocolate has a better fat profile and about the same added sugar as most nut butters.

Re: Nut butters

Peanut butter is not paleo because peanuts are not nuts, they are legumes.

Almond and cashew butters are generally allowed.

Re: Nut butters

For what it's worth, if you have problems tolerating nuts it may be worth soaking/dehydrating some and making your own nut butters or checking out the ones from Wilderness Family Naturals

As much as I love the paleo ideals, I think nuts are poorly understood when it comes to avoiding gut irritating constituents.

Ooh. First time I'm seeing soaked nut butter. Thanks Liz!

Paleo man ate legumes.

"The fruits, nuts, legumes, roots and other noncereals that provided 65-70% of typical gatherer-hunter subsistence (Eaton and Konner 1985) were generally consumed within hours of being gathered, with little or no processing (Schroeder 1971) and often uncooked.

"The fiber in preagricultural diets came almost exclusively from fruits, roots, legumes, nuts and other naturally occurring noncereal plant sources, so it was less associated with phytic acid than is fiber from cereal grains (Eaton 1990)."
