Agave Nectar - Paleo or not?

I know there are plenty of people in both camps. My question is, does anyone know if Dr. Cordain ever took opinion on this one? I don't have the book anymore so I can't check it.

Also, (and I'm really not trying to be antagonistic) do the people who think it is Paleo also recommend "Paleo" recipes with "a little bit of sugar" "salt to taste" and/or a "less than an ounce of cheese"....

Just trying to live by the code as much as possible.

Thanks!!!

Nothing wrong with that, but nothing wrong with a little butter and other items. I tend to eat paleo but also believe that things in the proper moderation aren't going to hurt me.

Just my opinion.

Fairly certain (although I just skimmed the book and can't find it) that agave nectar (syrup?) is a no-no from a strict paleo viewpoint

I'm a little more relaxed with my paleo in that I'll allow stuff like that (and thin crust kashi pizza!) 2-3 times a week though

Re: Agave Nectar - Paleo or not?

Agave is considered an added sugar just like white sugar or even honey. Definitely a no go on Paleo.

I like to think of my diet as "unprocessed," rather than Paleo. I do bake with agave nectar and honey (with almond and coconut flour), and also include a small amount when I make salad dressing. I'm also a big fan of butter, coconut oil, etc. that Cordain shuns. It definitely won't ruin your diet, but just be careful with it. Don't use it as a crutch.

Re: Agave Nectar - Paleo or not?

It's a no. It's super high in fructose, worse than high fructose corn syrup I believe.

"The principal constituent of the agave is starch, such as what is found in corn or rice. The process in which the agave starch is converted into refined fructose and then sold as the sweetener agave nectar is through an enzymatic and chemical conversion that refines, clarifies, heats, chemically alters, centrifuges, and filters the non-sweet starch into a highly refined sweetener, fructose"

Much worse, HFCS is 55% fructose, agave nectar is >80%. Also, as the rest of your post noted, it's a highly refined product. It's not like they cold-press the whole plant and the "nectar" just oozes out. You are better off using sugar IMO.

Or maple syrup or honey if you are on a natural trip.
