Nice article.

Speed work is certainly a great method for improving the power lifts, and dynamic effort is religiously practiced by folks like Westside.

But they don't work deadlifts nearly as often as squatting, and I've never seen many olympic lifts in PL programs. The westside guys think it's too taxing on the CNS, among other reasons. I imagine that they would really hate the oly lifts for that reason. And perhaps they would just use speed varations in the deadlift ROM.

I have maintained a lot of deadlifting strength through much lighter oly lifts, so I'm obviously a fan, but I would be interested in commentary on whether there is much value in them for a powerlifter.

When I competed in PL my main influences were PLUSA magazine and Dr. Squat, Fred Hatfield. I did most of my off season squatting in a high bar/arse to ankles fashion and then progressed to a PL style squat about 6-8 weeks from comp (felt like cheating compared to a real squat). I also did a mountain of powercleans (hatfield talkd constantly about compensatory acceleration and range of movment, hence the PC's and OL style off season squat.) Now the Wesside guys HATE this essentially linear periodisation that I did but at 19years old, 181 lbs and oly wearing an inzer lever belt I had a 565 PL squat. No other "gear" to speak of. If you can crush at the OL's you will do well at PLing. Not so the other way around.

Someone needs to update the Westside guys that all the Soviet science they draw from to justify the conjugate method does nto represnet the approaches of current russian lifters:

What kind of a difference did you note in your rock bottom squat bests compared to your best PL squat numbers?

Hmm, i dont think so. Olympic lifting movements, help vertical jumping... yes i accept that of course, but helping deadlift, i don't think so.

With that in mind, does WS need a revision? Which, in your opinion would be a more efficient or effective protocol (All things working for a season)??
