Well I know for me, I tend to eat when I am bored. So at night I will try and just go to bed and it keeps me from snacking on junk. I know they said in the study that this wasnt really clear, but for me, it is a big factor.

For me sleep is important in that it helps the sore muscles heal faster.

I will follow behind Rob with a slight caveat...read it, but try not to laugh at the horribly reactionary literary style of the authors.
It's a great book with tons of useful information, but it reads like a conspiracy theory infomercial :p |

I love infomercials!
I mean I very much enjoyed that book! On this note a Question (sort of): I had been sleeping very well for a couple of months after reading the book but for the last two months I haven't been able to sleep much at all. Has also slightly affected my performance. And thats while maintaining most of the same practices. I'm thinking stress due to my release from the Army at the end of next week. And starting a business, and a degree in the fall, and moving into a crappy bachelor apartment out of this nice 3 bedroom house, having to sell my car and not having a clue how any of it is going to work. NAAAHHHHHH!!! I'm sure none of those things have anything to do with it! Either way I'm a gluton for self imposed punishment. !!!YAY BURPEES!!! I guess the question is anybody have any suggestions? (Other than sort my life out, I'm aware of that one! LOL I make myself laugh!) |

For what it's worth, I've always found gentle swimming before bedtime (1-2 hours) to be very relaxing particulary if you can hop in a Jacuzzi at the end. May just be me but I think it brings out the endorphins from exercise without the adrenaline that you'd get if you did something more vigorous.
You could also try melatonin. Seems to work for some people. As for the psychological aspects, there are a whole host of techniques for managing stress. I have found in the past that simple meditation is one of the best. Even if you just sit and let the thoughts enter your mind at random, you will find that you relax. At first, stressful thoughts will tend to crowd your thinking but if you just let them pass into your conscious mind and then pass out, you will see that so many of the worries are just fleeting thoughts. They are not You, just impulses that float through your consciousness. When you have awareness of all these thoughts trying to distract you and make you miserable, you realize how futile or inconsequential many of them are. Gurdjieff, who had some great ideas, compared these thoughts to a horse that you, the conscious person, had to ride. The horse will chase after any bit of grass -- your job as the rider is to keep the horse under control. Anyway, I'm no yogi but that's what I found. On a more prosaic note, I've always found that 90% of the things you worry about never come to pass. |
