Grass fed protein powder
Just saw this new protein on Rogues website. Has anyone tried it? Rogue Protein (wfs)
Is eating protein powder from grass-fed animals overkill? or is it really that much better? |

Re: Grass fed protein powder
$30 a pound wow.
The main benefit of grass fed beef is the Omega 3:6 ratio, whereas fat is pretty much non-existent in whey. Maybe a happy cow makes better milk protein but how much better can it be? |

Re: Grass fed protein powder
There is ZERO benefit to grass fed protein supplements. $30 a pound... Good Lord! If they get that God bless America...

Yeah, it seems kinda gimmicky to me. I was hoping I would get your input Chris...if anybody knows protein, it's you.

Re: Grass fed protein powder
Although I have nothing to back up my statement other than what we know about processed proteins, I'd think most of the benefits of a grass-fed source get lost in the process to turn it into a powdered form.
Processed protein loses nutrition and its protein content when it's heated and preserved. It's simply due to the increased surface area - the product is suddenly vulnerable to degradation. The more you play with the original source, the more the moisture level increases, protein loss intensifies, and the full profile of aminos and omegas degrades. |

We kind of touched on this in that thread. Yep, $30/lb is pretty insane. But people out there will buy it if they have the means. They will like that it doesn't use any soy lecithin (some protein powders out there use sunflower lecithin), no sweetners (great for those people sensitive to them), and the fact that it's grass-fed (which supports the whole grass-fed drive). Just to gain some perspective, it's still cheaper than buying a carton of MuscleMilk or liquid protein at the store at $3-4 a unit. It costs $2 a serving which really isn't that bad and would be the same price as the cheapest MM generic knockoff protein drinks. It's not the only super expensive whey protein catered to CrossFitters that has hit the market. I can't remember the name of another one but the company is owned by CF gym owner that does SealFit (not Mark Divine). Intensity Nutrition is another that comes to mind. Site is down as it upgrades for now but my friend orders a preworkout from them (let's face it, he loves SealFit). |

Re: Grass fed protein powder
Yeah, the only real advantage in grass fed whey powder would be for ethical and/or environmental reasons. If you're looking for something a little more economical, Stronger Faster Healthier uses grass fed source, and their pure whey powder only runs about $30 for a 2 pound bag.

Re: Grass fed protein powder
Well, the SFH Recovery has a bunch of stuff added that ups the cost. I still think they are making money hands over fist on price margin with it but it's schnazzy marketing. They have the ribose, CoQ10, and carnitine. Not really a lot of Carnitine, IMO. It has joint complex and apparently added isoleucine, leucine (not all that much) and taurine. A tid bit of glutamine.
You could probably go out and buy L-glutamine and Leucine and just drop it down. I would have to go experiment with ribose, CoQ10 and carnitine since it's been about 10 years since I took that stuff and I always took it preworkout rather than post. Progenex is another that comes to mind. I'm sure it's changed it's formula at least 3x by now since it came out. Regular Progenex Recovery uses Whey Hydrosalate while it's more Muscle blend adds BCAA's. Both are about the same price as SFH Recovery. |
