Too fat for crossfit?

I am interested in doing crossfit but wondering if I am just too fat right now. I know that all of the websites say the program is scalable to everyone's fitness level but I was advised by a trainer not to even try it til I lost 50lbs first; I am currently 330lbs. Just wondering what other's opinions are and if anyone has any suggestions for working up to that goal.

Re: Too fat for crossfit?

So long as a CF gym/trainer scaled appropriately I don't see it being a problem.

If they didn't, yeah that could be a really big bad problem.

Re: Too fat for crossfit?

Crossfit offers exercise, coaching and nutrition advise ... Which will help you lose weight.

What trainer gave the advise? A CF coach?

I am a big man also- the main concern was pace - start at 2 days a week for a few weeks than start adding days as your body gets accustomed to getting its *** kicked ...

Of course get the go ahead from your doc

Hi Craig,

Yes, it was a crossfit coach that told me this.

Wow.

Here's the kicker. How are you supposed to lose weight in the first place without doing something. Diet yes, will help but movement+diet is 2X.

I don't think for someone like you starting out I would push intensity of some CF WOD's but honestly...

Re: Too fat for crossfit?

Hi Blair,

I know for sure that dieting alone is not going to do the trick. I already do go to a gym but do not seem to be getting very good results. I have lost about 20 pounds over the last year and it has stayed off but I had hoped to do better than that. I don't feel very motivated to go to that gym and I guess I need someone to hold me accountable. That's what I liked about crossfit is that you have something specific to do and a certain amount of time to get it done, with someone pushing you to make it happen.

Yep defined goals and a coach keeping you on track.

Any other CF gyms/trainers around?

Re: Too fat for crossfit?

I think you should make appointments to talk to several trainers and see which one you can click with.

We had a woman at my box who lost 100+ lbs in just over a year. We have another guys who has lost 65 lbs.

Your trainer can assess your needs and ability and should scale the warmup and WOD's to your fitness level.

Good luck.

Re: Too fat for crossfit?

You are absolutely not too fat for crossfit. Don't be afraid, the crossfit box is a judgement free zone, and they will adjust the workouts to fit your ability. Check out the video series "killing the fat man" on YouTube. Please go, it will be hard, but you will get results fast. Good luck and keep us posted!
