Hamstring Mobility/Prehab

Hi everyone!

I have a question/concern about my hamstring mobility.

I have noticed tightness in my upper left hamstring area. I only experience the tightness during a very specific movement. The movement is part of the kettlebell swing. I notice a tug/tightness in the hamstring when the KB is swinging down through my legs and I push my butt back, with shins vertical (like sitting in a chair). I feel a distinct difference in ROM on the left side vs the right during this movement. Other hamstring intensive movements like forward folds are unnaffected.

I'm trying to look upstream and downstream for the root of the problem. I am thinking maybe glute or low back tightness may be the culprit, but am not sure. Does anyone have any ideas of what might be going on, and what type of mobility work/strengthening might be beneficial to play around with? For example, if it is low back tightness that is pulling on the hamstring, could it be due to hip flexor weakness?

It's not something that is acutely injured or really is effecting my training/day to day life, but I do worry over time about doing something serious happening to that hamstring.

Re: Hamstring Mobility/Prehab

I'd bet that you don't truly have tightness, but rather inhibition of the left glute which places more demand on the hams and low back to act as hip extenders. Just my thoughts ... Work on glute activation for a week or two with the supine bridge and see where you go from there.

Thanks Megan! So when my hip is extending, I may be overrecruiting my ham and low back, to compensate for an underdeveloped glute? Makes sense. I'll give the supine bridge a shot. Maybe a single leg glute bridge on the left side would be something to try as well?

Re: Hamstring Mobility/Prehab

Hi Megan - Just letting you know that I worked on glute bridging progressively and the imbalance/tightness is gone! Thanks!

I think I have some tweaking to do on my KB technique.
