I am trying to find an inexpensive triceps bar that will fit in my cage. I found several that are just at 5 feet but that is too short.

The one at New York Barbells is nice but shipping is the killer (if the free shipping included the bar, I would probably give it a try).

Is there anything out there less expensive?

Why do you feel the need for a specialized/isolating bar? Do you really need one?

I really like the exercise and it works well for me.

My problem is getting enough heavy weight to use safely.

You could probably get a welder to modify a regular one for you a lot cheaper than buying one...However, i couldn't find the one you were looking at on new york, so i could be wrong...

Yes...I started thinking of maybe screwing on some pipe but the 5/8" (I think) bolts that are needed look expensive.

I just pulled an Olympic sleeve off of a dumbbell and the bolt was a 1/2" x 13. A hardened bolt of that size is not that much. I just do have an Olympic triceps to try it out but I have seen them for $25 used.
