Pre-Workout Ideas for Early AM Sessions

I'm a collegiate rower and am out the door at 5am sharp every morning to make it to practice on time. I usually get up around 435am or so and have a half a peanut butter/nutella sandwhich and my creatine supplement with a big glass of water. Our workouts are pretty rigorous and we mix in a lot of cf elements for land training. Lately, I've been having a hard time getting reved up for the morning's workouts and have found myself feeling really groggy. Is there something else I should be eating or taking (supplements, etc.). Would caffeine of some sort help?

I'm usually in bed by 945 every night and thats about as early as I can with school and whatnot. I know eating a full meal like an hour before the workout instead of just the snack would help too, but I don't think I can force myself to be up at 4am..

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Provided you're eating enough generally, working out on an empty stomach shouldn't be a big deal.

*shrug* More sleep wouldn't hurt, a cup of coffee in the morning might help.

Caffeine can help, but being groggy, especially if its more frequent towards the end of the workout cycle, can also indicate not enough recovery. I'd look at sleep first, as it's less than 7 hours/day from your description and then seeing if you are getting enough carbs.

Fruit upon waking tends to gimme a little kick in the rear along with a glass of green tea. Keep in mind that fat (peanut butter) tends to slow the processing of nutrients down a little bit. Not that, that is generally bad but in this case it might be. I would try some mixed fruit and a big friggin glass of green tea.

Buying a weight gainer like quick mass or serious mass might help. You wouldnt need the whole serving maybe half or even 1/4 of a serving but that would give you alot of carbs with protein and fat that is very quick

Coffee seems like a no-brainer here to me. Caffeine is fat-soluble so adding something with fat (cream, coconut milk) will help it absorb a little more quickly and get you up and going in no time.
