Bump on the side of my shin

On top of my terrible shin splints when running and road marching, I have this strange lump in/on my outside shin/calf muscle, whenever I stress out my shins the area around the lump will burn pretty bad.

I have been to a few "doctors" and they can't tell what it is, any suggestions?

What do you mean by "doctors?"

Is this something that has shown up over time, or was there a sudden injury some time ago? How often does it flare up, and how long does it take to go away? Does it go away completely and then return as soon as you become active again?

Re: Bump on the side of my shin

"doctors" as in Army PA's, all they did was threaten to kick me out if it persisted, which ofcourse is a great fix to an injury.

It slowly showed up from when I did marching band in high school, I am guessing from having to roll my feet heel to toe, although it is only on the left side. It will flare up after any running, or road marching. The lump itself has never gone away, I have had it for 5 or so years, over time of doing nothing it will go down and be the see of a M&M but once I am active again it will grow to the size of a quarter.

Re: Bump on the side of my shin

Do you think it could be a cyst or something? Man, I have no idea; I thought maybe it was a tear or something, but that seems kind of unlikely.

Have you tried going to a "real" doctor for a MRI or something similar? They're pricey, so it sucks, but maybe that or someone who deals with sports injuries would be more knowledgeable.

Yes, I am thinking about going to a sports injury type place and get it checked out, it is really the only thing holding me back from becoming really inshape.

Re: Bump on the side of my shin

If you could get a picture it would really help. What it sounds like is an enlarged bursa - I have them on both legs from cross country running in junior high and high school - though for me they don't cause pain. Mine only enlarge with running, jump rope work etc. If this is what it is then you may be experiencing bursitis (an irritated and inflamed bursa).
