Re: The Dog Thread

Rebecca, Veronica and Vickie - thank you.

It was an incredibly tough decision, but I called the vet yesterday, and made the appointment for tomorrow. He has not improved, and can no longer keep any food down - and the amount of food he has been eating this week could be measured in grams, anyway. For a dog who loved food all of his life - even things that he was allergic to - it is clear that life holds no joy for him anymore. He has a hard time doing anything other than drinking water and sleeping.

Vickie-
Beef's medical history is quite long. We've seen the BEST vets that money could buy, since he was 4 months old, and presented with symptoms of Congenital Radialhead Luxation (basically, his left elbow was malformed, and the radius was growing beyond the elbow joint, which would result in a permanent dislocation). We were told by 3 different vets that surgery was either impossible, or if possible, would be ineffective. I then consulted with the head of small animal surgery at Virginia Tech, and we thoroughly discussed what needed to be done, and what the likelihood of recovery would be. He told me he had done the surgery a few times, successfully, but then put me in contact with another surgeon whom he'd gone to school with, and whom he said was a better surgeon than he was. Of course, we went there, the Dr. was great, he'd done numerous surgeries of that type - even on bulldogs - and almost guaranteed a full recovery... which was the eventual result.

His medical issues expanded from that first surgery, over the next 8 years, to a file that is almost 3 inches thick now. It would be hard for me to recall the names of all of the Veterinarians and wonderful Vet techs who have seen and treated him over his lifetime.

Re: The Dog Thread

Sean, I am sorry you have to make the decision. It stinks.
You are doing the right thing even though you are hurting.

Re: The Dog Thread

Hang in there Sean. We lost two of our cats in a three month span last year. One to a sudden liver failure, the other was old and had health problems for years. Both were tough. It isn't easy to let them go. Just remember all the good times that outnumber the few bad times you have to go through with them.

Christy, Pete and Benji - thank you.

My wife and I cried our eyes out all weekend. It is slowly getting a bit better, but it is awfully lonely without him around.

Re: The Dog Thread

It is strange how much a part of the family a dog can be. My 8 year old dog is sitting on the couch with me now.

I know exactly how you feel; I had to make the decision last August for my buddy Arnie http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/...p/P1040899.jpg (WFS)

His spine was fusing together and he could barely walk; the steroids to help him walk were destroying his organs. He never stopped wagging his tail I got him from the SPCA when he was 6 months, he was 11 years old when we had to do it. Even our vet was choked up when she told us it was time. Probably the hardest thing I've ever done. Hang in there man.

Re: The Dog Thread

Does any one own a Corso? Best dog in the world IMO.

Cant seem to find a breeder though - I'd kill to own one again.
