Negative Encouragement

Has anyone here ever experienced people jeering at them while they are exercising? It happened to me today in the park. I was doing death by pullups (for a new PR), and some people sitting nearby started mocking me. What the @#%^ makes them think they have any right to sit on their behinds and mock someone who is exercising?!?!? I think one of the fools almost came over to "show me how real pullups are done", but he chickened out... thank God.

Anyway, sorry to blow off steam this way, but I suspect that you all will understand how frustrating it felt. The funny thing is, that I think I got another round in due to their negative encouragement.

Does anyone else have any stories like this one?

Cheers,
Bonnie

Re: Negative Encouragement

Yes happens alot. If some one comes and talks to me we usually have a pleasant conversation and go about our day. Twice I had people snicker about what I was doing and mock the motions, complete with sound effects.

I asked them if they would care to try the work, they declined with laughing. I then told them to have a good time oiling each other up in the sauna and if they had purses to match their gloves. It too the hard core guys about 5 minutes to regain their composure after fits of laughter.

Then I would train in front of those people every day.

Re: Negative Encouragement

Not fun. Unfortunately, you have people like this everywhere.

I met a guy at my neighbor's house and this guy starts trash-talking in relation to CrossFit. So I step over to the pull-up bar and bang out five kipping pull-ups. This gent says, "Those aren't real pull-ups." So I bang out 5 dead-hangs and jump down from the bar and tell him to have at it.

His reply? "Oh, I can't. I have two bad shoulders. But I used to be able to do them."

I looked him square in the eye and asked, "How many women do you know that can do pull-ups?"

And he just stood there, with no answer . . .

(But negative encouragement can be a good thing. Just use it wisely. At our affiliate, we have the Cupcake of the Month Poster. Nobody wants their photo on it.)

Re: Negative Encouragement

Thanks everyone! At least I don't feel so bad about it now. The hardest thing to get over is how rude people can be... even if I disagree with how someone is doing their exercises, I keep my mouth shut.

Grant, you're right! I should make sure those people are around every time I do pullups. I would very quickly become a superhero at pullups if I had people taunting me all the time.

Bonnie

Re: Negative Encouragement

Don't pay them any mind. They would probably make fun of you regardless of what you were doing.

Re: Negative Encouragement

Brandon, the park near North Berkeley BART has a nice little pullup, dip, step-up station for joggers. The bars are slightly thicker that the ones at the gym I go to. So the pullups are nicely harder to perform at the park.
