Re: Power Rack or Squat Stand?

If the extra rack hooks don't work/fit just make some of your own. A section of wood with some bolts and screw on a "J" section to hold the weight. Anything outside the rack you shouldn't need to be too pretty to work, and you can still squat heavy inside.

That squat stand is worse in every way.

Re: Power Rack or Squat Stand?

I think that if you can swing it, get the rack. I'd like to have a stands but instead I sought out the the right rack...it racks the bar on the outside and inside of the posts.
Nice for squating and benching alone...it'll be hard to safely push yourself without taking the chance of a miss. Same goes for the bumpers and something like OHSs. I messed my back for a day or two trying to keep some small-box gym's metal plates off the floor...
Not anymore with the bumpers
I have a 'York FTS Power Cage' with a height extention. PU bar on is just useable being 6'2", but my kip is limited because of it. MUs are practically out of the question (rings inside my short cage).

I use my rack for lots more...it's also the foot-anchor for my gheto GHD and spotter for HSPUs. If you don't want the foot-print of a rack and don't miss the money, get some spotter racks like pillars of power from IronMind (search the forums for DIY options, too).

Re: Power Rack or Squat Stand?

I wouldn't want to attempt OHS in a cage or on/off a rack, ever. It's just asking for trouble.

This may not satisfy all your requirements but I built these "Pillars of Poverty" for about $80. I just sized them so I could easily lift a bar in either the back squat or front rack positions. I've been CFing for a year and haven't run into any movement that I can't do with these. They're made from galvanized steel plumbing pipe from Home Depot/Lowes. And you can tuck them away in a corner when not in use.
Jason,
I like the idea of using pipe instead of concrete and buckets, but I have a question?
How stable is the bar when it is resting on the stands?
It might be the picture tricking me, but it doesn't look like anything is keeping it from rolling off.

The extra height of the elbows would keep it from going to the floor on everyting but a crazy re rack. I like the piping idea myself. I am actually just designing my pull up bar and was wondering how hard it was to thread the pipe for the fittings.
