I am 6'1", 200 lbs. and between 15 and 20% bodyfat. This is about my third week of crossfit and I am 36. I look at the numbers everyone else is posting under comments and compare them to my training log and I am WAY behind what seems to be normal for someone of my height, weight, and body comp.

My best time on the mile is just under 9 min (if someone very large and angry is chasing me)

Max reps on pullups is 12 (kipping like hell and doing everything shy of ricocheting a testicle off the wall) subsequent sets drop off dramatically and I am relegated to doing negatives by set 3 or 4.

Best time on 5k: 30:25
Best time on Fran: 13:48
Best time on Elizabeth: 16:34
Best on Cindy: 12 rounds

Just out of curiousity, what were some of y'all's "vital stats" when you started crossfit, and how far have you come? How long did it take to see marked improvement. I am in this for the long haul because I believe that it is the best program for practical, real world strength and conditioning. But it is a little humiliating to go from being "reasonably fit" under my old work out program, to being far behind the curve in crossfit.

I don't think you're experience is all that out of the "normal" range.

I'm a lot smaller than you (5'6" (if I stretch), 155 lbs.), which makes for a different relationship with the bodyweight exercises, and a lot older when I started CrossFit (about 47 then, I'm 50 now). But my 3-week point probably wasn't much different. Fran was about 12 minutes the first time.

Cindy was definitely about 12 or 13 rounds (can still do only 20 "on schedule" (my pullups are terrible)). My max pullups when I started was about 4, and my best still isn't a whole lot better than your 12.

And yeah, I thought I was "reasonably fit," too. You *will* get better, that's a sure thing . . .

Jim-

I was a state champion PL'er, kickboxer...played with OL'ing, KB's and sprinting prior to CF. It took me about 6 months to do all the WOD's. Once I could do them it seemed impossible to add some other training in there like I saw Frank Olis and others doing. This happened with time however.

Approach things slowly, ratchet up the intensity gradually and in a years time you will be able to do things that are literally impossible now.

I started from pretty much nothing:

"My Diane"
21-15-9 reps of
Shoulder Press 2x14kg Dumbells
Deadlift 90kg, 105kg (last two rounds)

Time 35 mins approx

"Helen", 23 mins
"Fran", with 80lb thruster, 25mins (what the hell was I doing? I can't remember...)

My first WOD was Chelsea; I got 6 rounds, gassed and quit!

10 months down the line, I've got a 7:30 as prescribed Diane, a 4:46 as prescribed Fran...etc

You're the right height and weight to be a CrossFit monster! Keep it up you'll be breathing fire and crapping thunder soon enough!!

I started about 10 weeks ago from what turn out to be nothing (15 years of desk job and un-useful gym work outs).

Since then with CF:
5k is down 7 min to 40 mins
Pull-up did not exist. They are up to 5 (unassisted).
Bench press is at 90#.

You mentioned a log, for me it is the biggest motivator (other then some of the insane posted times or one arm PU videos). Also, I suspect that people with beginner results may shy from posting. Took me about 9 weeks before my first WOD result posting.

Begin crossfitting in August '04 at age 43.
Pullups: 1 to 13
BP: 135 to 205
Clean: 95 to 205
OHS: 45 to 155
DL 225 to 350
1 mile: 12:42 to 9:36
Back squat: 225 to 315
Front squat 115 to 225
10k: DNF to 62 min.
Chelsea: 13 to 28
Diane: 18 min to <10 min
Fran: 18 min to <9 min
FGB: can't recall...
Still looking for a muscle-up, >300 FGB, 30 round Chelsea, Sub 6 Fran, sub 8 mile, etc, etc...

Yeah, the program really works. Patience lad, old age and treachery will win the day. Still plotting, scheming, planning, brooding...

Hi Jim,
Just to give you some perspective I am 35 5'10" 185lbs and started crossfit last summer. The first WOD for me was Fran and it took me 16 minutes to complete and I thought I was going to die. I also thought I was in good shape until I started Crossfit. Now after a year of crossfitting I am below 5 minutes on Fran. I follow the WOD almost every day and it's worked wonders for my fitness level. Stay with it and you will improve.

Jim, Started CF two years ago at age 40 (600/215 lbs). It took me 6 months to complete all WOD's as written. Some benchmark diffrences:

Diane: 06/26/04 11:48
05/06/05 5:57

Fran: 06/08/04 10:43
05/05/30 6:33

5K run Before CF 32:00
last run 24:30

I've done over 40 pullups without touching the ground, walked over 100' on my hands, cut my weight to 200 lbs, and joined and continue to participate in a great community with unique and intresting athletes. Remember these workouts are designed to crush world class athletes and military top performers.

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement. This is so different from anything else I've ever done before. I'm not used to getting my a$$ so thoroughly kicked, its nice to know that my experience is not unique among crossfitters.

This is encouraging. I'm 43 as well and track pretty well with Alex at the start (except I can run faster :biggrin:). I'm still in the 6 week warmup zone although at my level, warmup level kicks my butt. Before picture:
6'4" 193 Bodyfat around 15% I'd say (pure guess based on US Navy tables)
Pullups (fresh and kipping like crazy): 3 tops
Pushups: 33
Mile: 7:30
5k: 27:00
Bench: around 135
OHS: 65 (shoulders, balance, flexibility limits)
Clean: learning @ 95 left side is left behind most lifts.

I have to say that this program is a dream come true for me. I absolutely love not knowing what the plan is until I check the website in the morning and I love the fact that the WODs involve perfecting skills (like oly lifts and gymnastics moves) rather than just moving weights.
