Bumper plate recommendations?

Just getting started w/ Crossfit in my garage gym & I'm quickly discovering that I'm going to need some bumper plates fairly soon if I'm going to learn to snatch, overhead squat, etc w/ any reasonably difficult weight. I currently have 345 lbs in iron plates, but 4 of those are 45's, which I know I can't combine w/the bumpers. Can I combine the 35's & lower w/ bumpers & drop them if the bumpers are larger in diameter & take the bounce?
Also, what brand of bumper plates are best for starting out, w/o spending a lot of money?

Re: Bumper plate recommendations?

If you are going to do a low drop--like in a deadlift, you'd probably be OK as long as 50% or more of the weight is bumper plate.

Higher drops--like from an overhead squat or in the upper range of a snatch, I'd only want change in iron and the rest bumpers.

The nice thing about bumpers is once you got them, they'll last a long time unless you chuck them all the time (try to avoid, despite how cool it looks).

The beginnings of my bumper set are the Econ v2s by Pendlay. They're especially economical here:

There are also 10% off discount codes for Wayfair (formerly CSN Stores) floating around that will help even more.

Re: Bumper plate recommendations?

Dave,

The Rogue and Pendlay bumpers are both solid and they are very similar. You can definitely find the Pendlays out there for cheaper. The only other I would add to the list are Troy VTX bumpers. They are very solid, with an extremely dead bounce and price-wise are competitive with the Pendlays econs.

If you would like more information on either the Pendlays or the VTX, we are a dealer for both so send me a PM and I would be happy to help.

I have Hi-temp, Pendlay econ, and the Troy VTX bumpers. The VTX bumpers are the best choice in my opinion. Order the package set from Fringe or KettleBell King for the best prices I've found. You can get around 280 lbs for 400 dollars.

Grant,
I have some VTX also, really like them. Why do you think they are best? Value, performance, or both?

Derek - I know you didn't ask me, but I've owned Hi Temps, Pendlay Econ V2, and the black VTX plates. My favorite was Hi Temp based on how they felt and looked. But the VTX seemed the best built with the heavy duty insert, not as wide, and much more affordable for large quantities from Fringe.

Thanks for Info Ben, I sell VTX but have a really good relationship with Hi Temp. Always like to hear from customers.

Thanks,
D-Rob
