Canadian Reservists

This may be a bit off topic.

Except for the fact that many of these folks are regulars at CrossFit gyms across Canada. And many if them CrossFit once in training and after deployment.

But here is a long and interesting article on the Canadian Reserves. After years of disrespect and threatened extinction, the reserves are finally getting the respect they deserve. Reservists must compete for deployment spots for Afghanistan and other places. The writer, Christie Blatchford, says the role of reservists is the great untold story of the Canadian mission in Afghanistan.

BTW, Canada has no National Guard. So militia units do civil defence and emergency stuff.

Re: Canadian Reservists

We are also a completely volunteer system too. As reservists we have to volunteer for a deployment, they can't just deploy us.

Re: Canadian Reservists

Good article, Ms. Blatchford is an excellent writer - if you get the chance pick up 'Fifteen Days' by her.

As for the fellow who had to quit his job, I thought the federal gov't came in with legislation a couple of years ago protecting reservists job rights?

Re: Canadian Reservists

They might have but I don't think it was everywhere that did it, more on the Provincial level then Federal.

Re: Canadian Reservists

where Chris is from. There is a Registered Nurse that is fighting both union and Nursing employer to secure her job as a civilian RN inorder for her to perform her military role as a RN. I think the legislation was enacted real fast and did not cover the true flavour and the broad spectrum of the citizen soldier.

This instance .. the employer wouldn't freeze her job for her until her return and I believe that union wouldn't address the issue and couldn't safe guard her seniority within the union. ( sure.. she no longer paying her union dues I bet)

This is a while back .. not sure what the outcome is/was.

The reservist has been a closet saviour to the regular force for decades, I for one and many friends whom have been reservists that have been stand in for regular service. Many of whom have been deployed as peace keeper and combatant had to quit their normal jobs inorder to go to do military duties.
