Tapering before tournament

I posted this question in the Crosspit section but got no replys. So, I'm posting here too.

How would you guys advise as to a taper before a BJJ/MMA tournament? My trainers say 14 days prior to cut workload in half but keep intensity at the same level. Then do nothing at all the three days prior to the tournament. What do you recommend?

I would either take the whole week leading up off, or do light activity on a bike.

I agree with this... I stop training completely 4 days out and start going light 7 days out. I always feel fresh going in.

Could you expand on that?

Re: Tapering before tournament

All good advice thus far, just wanted to add I would recommend something to excite your nervous system the day before the tournament. Something like 1 or 2 heavy power cleans (90% 1RM). Nothing that will tax you in any way but just a quick wake up call to the CNS after taking a few days off is helpful.

Good luck!

I do my weight training in the morning. When I don't do weights, I do some form of lactate threshold/cardio training. I grapple in the afternoons and finish the sessions with more cardio.

Re: Tapering before tournament

As in exercises, progressions, examples, program goals, reasons for doing cardio (I assume you don't mean metcon) when such LSD-type efforts don't even remotely resemble the short high-power efforts of a MMA/BJJ match.
