Fat is spreading like air!

wfs: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20461564/

Article on rising obesity rates. And people wonder why I want to start my CrossFit gym someday in Mississippi.

Check out the humorous slide show in the article....He called in fat!

I believe you military folks call that a "target-rich environment"!

Re: Fat is spreading like air!

Well, if obesity is the rising problem, then crossfit is the rising answer. New affiliates seem to be popping up all over the place these days, which will of course increase popularity and thus affiliation rate. The only problem I see is that when Crossfit truly becomes huge, many of these same scientists who cry and moan about obesity will bring every weapon to bear on one of the best means to combat it.

When that happens, I just hope we are all going to be ready to defend Crossfit against the world.

Re: Fat is spreading like air!

Derek,

Don't you technically mean obesity is an expanding problem?

As far as the scientists, I think we'll be fine, if they decide to actually do experiments. I'd compare my last physical to your average competitive triathlete any day, if the comments on the most recent Rest Day are even remotely accurate.

The only criticisms I've ever seen has been theoretical. And if we can learn through experiments better ways to do things, that's fine. Never fear somebody attacking you. Fear failing to learn from it, and getting better. Do that enough times, you got no worries.

I will add, it would be the proverbial plug in our perceptual arteries to assume no further growth in our fitness technology is possible.

Re: Fat is spreading like air!

I'd like to think that everybody would love crossfit with an objective study, but unfortunately, there are just too many people who want to live in the same error and stupidity they have been living in. I won't go into specific politics, but I'm sure that if everyone were to look at their governments and general society, they would find that kind of thing all over the place, whether the reason for peoples' decisions are laziness, stubbornness, personal profit of some sort or whatnot. Just because scientists are smart doesn't mean they can't or won't act like idiots.

That is a very good point, however, that we musn't consider Crossfit to be the absolute best, with no room for improvement. Crossfit can be wrong as well as right and that is why Crossfitters must take steps to keep the right:wrong ratio in our favor as much as possible.

Re: Fat is spreading like air!

Let's all talk about how people are getting more overweight each year.
Maybe if we talk a whole lot more, we'll burn enough calories to reverse that.

Re: Fat is spreading like air!

Keep in mind most of this data is based on BMI, which is a bunch of junk. I am technically pretty darn overweight according to BMI, and it's not really so...

Re: Fat is spreading like air!

BMI is junk with healthy individuals Craig, due to more muscle mass.

These people aren't healthy, and their BMI is a good indication of how out of control their obesity really is. I've also come to find that dropping the "mass gain" fad of bodybuilding actually will put one's body in the good BMI range and still be able to accomplish amazing feats. See OPT and AFT as examples.
