I started my new job this week and it landed me in Philly for a couple days for orientation. Last night, while looking for something to eat, I came across this tasty little 50's diner called Cheeburger Cheeburger. Although it wasn't close to what I was looking for, it seemed to be my only option other than pizza (you Philadelphians sure like your pizza). So while ordering, in true CrossFit fashion, I got to thinking about which is healthier, French Fries or Onion Rings (don't worry...I ordered the basket with both). Now, my thinking is that onion rings are the better option if worried about healthiness (the very act of eating either should discard any thought of health, but work with me here). First of all, onions are at least healthy when not deep-fried, as opposed to potatoes, which start out bad (and would probably be better deep-fried from an insulin release standpoint). Second, I wouldn't think onions would be very absorbent, so most of the funky grease is confined to the flour coating. The drawback though is that the onions are coated in flour, whereas fries are just raw potatoes plunked into boiling oil.

Thoughts? Opinions? Think I should be shot for even considering which one is better (I suppose I was more considering which was worse in reality)?

As a side note, the 1/2 lb patty melt at this place is great (not that I ate it....I asked someone else of course) and the shakes are the best I've ever tasted. I think I actually made that goofy face people make in commercials when tasting their KFC when I took my first sip of the milkshake.

A large cold beer will shield you against the negative effects of both the rings or the fries.

Ha. I have internal debates like that all the time. Like when I go to McDonald's. I enjoy a double quarter pounder with cheese combo, super sized. But I don't want to insulin crash from the fries, so I need more protein/fat. So I eat another double quarter pounder with cheese. It makes perfect sense! (just looked up at 2210 cals that meal is)

And as to which is better, rings or fries... whichever one tastes better with the meal. It's a given that you're washing it down with a cold beer though... right? That makes everything taste better.

Chris, after watching SuperSize Me I came to the conclusion that if you don't eat the fries you'll be reet, so when I go (I live so damn near) I do the two double cheese thang sans fries and veritably skip home.

Of course it's baaad for us. :-(

So it comes to this?...fries or onion rings, hang myself or shot to the head. Put down the guilt and eat the fries (or onion rings). Shoot for 90% complience per week and your good for a basket of whatever your poison!
