Afternoon Hunger

Unfortunately, the last three days I have resorted to Energy drink (on Monday and Tuesday) and soft drink (Wednesday) to fill myself up in the afternoon. That is destroying what I believe is otherwise a decent diet which I follow during the day (feel free to critique). Here is my eating pattern:

AM snack - Apple and either some almonds or sunflower seeds

Lunch - Salad with Chicken strips and LIGHT Ceasar dressing (hopefully that is not too bad)

PM snack - Banana/apple and almonds/seeds

My b-fast consists of cereal and a piece of fruit. I realize I should ditch the cereal, but I have two young kids and it is MUCH easier to eat cereal rather than cooking eggs.

I probably have to do some Paleo/Zone research and incorporate a different snack/increase the size of my portions. Thoughts??

Re: Afternoon Hunger

quickie suggestions:

I can't beleive you aren't starving after that breakfast. Eat some protein! A new trick I discovered and shared previously: make eggs (mix with other goodies: ham, veggies) at the beginning of the week and bake in a muffin tin - easy. Or hard boil a ton to keep on hand.

Add some fat to your lunch (avocado in your salad) to keep ya full longer.

Snacks: Try a full glass of water before you down the energy drink or soda. (You are "resorting" to liquid, not food - maybe you just thirsty, not hungry?)
I have been on a Lara bar kick lately for an easy snack - paleo and portable, yummy w/ enough fat to satiate me for awhile. My other fav: Carrots/apple/celery and sunbutter.

Re: Afternoon Hunger

Yes, if you're hungry in the afternoon, you should have eaten more earlier in the day. It's really pretty simple...

Re: Afternoon Hunger

Basically, what Walker said. The sugary cereal is not going to sustain you for that long or throughout the afternoon for that matter, though I can understand that it must be difficult with kids. You could hardboil some eggs the night before and eat a few in the AM with some bacon if you have time. They are great to snack on throughout the day. Also, you could poach or bake some chicken and cut it up for an easy snack. But if you browse this forum and other websites, such as WFS www.paleodiet.com, Robb Wolf's site and www.marksdailyapple.com (WFS), it will give you some more ideas about what to eat. Simply, cut the refined CHO/sugars and eat more fat and protein...keeps you full longer!!

Re: Afternoon Hunger

I would ditch the "LIGHT Ceasar dressing" as well along with the cereal.

Thoughts??

Very little detail here so I have to make a few assumptions. I assumed you were having a banana with your cereal, you were having about 10 almonds per snack, and your chicken strips were fast food. With these assumptions you are getting virtually half you calories from the 20 - 22 almonds you are eating. Plus, the almonds are making up nearly half of your protein intake and nearly 2/3 of your fat.

I will be the first to day that almonds are fine in a pinch. Heck, almonds are great in a pinch but they should make up nearly 50% of your daily nutrition.

Where are the vegetables? You've listed over 2000Kcal (with my assumptions) and the only veggies you taken in are in a fast food salad topped with fried chicken and smothered in a heavily processed food product.

As Katherine said, this isn't rocket surgery. If you are hungry you need to eat. if you want to stop afternoon hunger you need to eat more for lunch or at your afternoon snack.

Re: Afternoon Hunger

For quick eggs, you could try an egg poacher. I have this one which I put in the microwave for just over a minute and the eggs are done, picked it up at Wegmans for $3.

http://www.amazon.com/Nordic-Ware-Mi...dp/B00004W4UR/ (wfs)

and you could microwave bacon in a couple minutes also. Throw in an avocado and that should fill you up for a while.
