Starting For newcomers to the CrossFit methodology

question regarding workout scheduling

Hello. Im newish to crossfit/the message boards/zone paleo. Im a Navy ROTC midshipman and during the semester I have mandatory PT on MWF from 6-7. The stuff we do there is relatively "un-crossfitish" and is very running heavy. Once we finish up the "acclimation schedule"(fat-bodies burning off the summer rust) well run 3-4 miles per session and do pushups/situps/scissor kicks/other lame stuff when we get back. There's my background... my question is as follows:

Ive been doing WOD's over the summer and want to continue. Should I do them on T, TH, Sat rest Sunday? Itd be pretty impossible/annoying for me to follow 3 on 1 off. The stuff we do at PT isnt very taxing on my body but I hate doing 2 workouts in a day. What are your thoughts? Should I just stick to 3 on 1 off and consider pt "active rest"?

Hey... I've got a similiar problem. I'm AD AF and we have mandantory PT MWT as well.

I know you said you didn't want to do it, but I've just bitten the bullet and done two workouts. The mandantory FUN is really not much, although our PT leader is CERT 1 Crossfit and tries to beef things up.

It took me a week, but I just sort of fell into a groove doing two workouts three times a week. The only time I regret it is like THIS WEEK where Coach, in all his evil plotting, manages to put such a heavy leg week at the same time we're doing a lot of running.

Hi Nick,

If it would be impossible and annoying to follow the 3 on/1 off program, then don't. Do the WODs when they fit into your schedule - there's no reason you can't do them a day or two after they are posted. I train a 3/1/2/1 schedule (Thursdays and Sundays off) and find it's been much better for my training and recovery than the prescribed 3/1.

Just listen to your body, if it's too much do less, if it's to less do more.

AD Navy here. We also have mando PT, but it's really...really...lame. I log it, but I don't really factor it into my CF workouts. On screen I've done 8 workouts in four days, but to my mind it's not.

You may want to check the Crossfit Endurance site to see if there is some guidance there as to timing and meshing the two.

Talk to your commander about implementing a CF program for your unit PT. Group PT is only beneficial for the weakest people in the group (in my experience). Distance running as a group is about the stupidest thing I've ever done. Prove to the boss that CF works and he might let everyone do it.
