Wow, I'm really NOT in shape

Being a Firefighter and seeing on the web site that there are quite a few of my bros and sisters using crossfit I decided to give this a try for the past few days. I've been doing the traditional lifting weights and cardio on separate days and I thought I was in pretty good shape until today. Today's WOD made me embarassed to even think I was in shape enough to do my job. What's even more mind blowing is seeing what some of the people accomplish in the videos on the site now that I've done a few WODs. Thanks for enlightening me, now I know I have a lot of work to do. I'm excited to see how this progresses.

We all kinda go through that, but it's amazing how fast you get better at it.

Re: Wow, I'm really NOT in shape

Michael,
Don't feel like the 'Lone Ranger'! EVERYONE experiences the same feelings.
Everyone is humbled when they walk into our facility and perform just the CrossFit warm-up for the first time. They will say, "This is just the warm-up...are you kidding me.....there's more? This is kicking my a**!"

Keep it up, and remain consistent and you will change, mentally and physically.

Heh--yep, I think that's a near-universal reaction from what I've seen on the boards. I finally figured how to arrange my dorm room furniture to create a makeshift "ghd" for situps/back extensions (haven't found convenient/complete gym facilities yet) and finally started easing into those... ow ow ow...

Important thing isn't to do the whole wod at first--it's just to do and not get discouraged.

Question Re: Wow, I'm really NOT in shape

Lots of great info here for workouts you can do at the firehall. Just spend some quality time with the search function. Tailboard jumps, farmer's walks with hose rolls, Cindy in full bunker gear and SCBA....

(jk on that last one)

Welcome!

Great to have another Firefighting Crossfitter up in here! The results will start coming in for you really fast i bet, you'll feel great and be able to perform at a fantastic level. Good choice to be here. Thanks for fighting fires. I was put right on my backside the first time i did a WOD (which was Fran) i thought "whoa you have got to be kidding me! people do this is 3 minutes!!" Keep working and with any luck you'll be a monster like them thar' some day.

Re: Wow, I'm really NOT in shape

I'm relieved that you ARE making the switch!

and thank you for your service

I work in a big box, and we give away memberships to LEO and fire. They without fail just camp out on the shoulder press machine for an hour. There's no way a lot of the guys I've seen could ever run me up a flight of stairs or something like that.

Good Luck, and make more converts!

Don't be rough on yourself, Michael. If you were doing your job competently, you obviously WERE in shape; this just means you could be in BETTER shape, which to some extent is true for everyone.

Re: Wow, I'm really NOT in shape

And there are always those in worse shape too. The greatest thing I've noticed is the possibilities, they seem nearly limitless. One must respect their age, physical conditioning, and have patience and perseverence. I am humbled at the thought that I'll never be successful enough at this to cease the process. I have not yet fully gotten into the crossfit methodology yet but got a jumping rope today. Only did power cleans today for the first time, which can build into bears and eventually WOD... Felt great though.
