Re: Another Planet fitness thread.

I'm happy I could bring to light an esoteric and insignificant spelling issue.

But hey, I bet you'd wish you would have known if you wrote "judgement" in a cover letter or essay. Then again, the employer/professor probably would think it was spelled with an "e" too.

I was taught in school that both "judgement" and "judgment" were acceptable.

This is how languages diverge, by the way. Right now English is broken into many dialects. Eventually they'll be completely separate. Meh.

As evidenced by ebonics.

I know no one that says aboot either...lol...but I do say eh. I'm a country kid in the prairies...I say a lot of things most don't. lol

Thanks to the internet, global media, and global travel, I suspect they're actually converging back together.

Re: Another Planet fitness thread.

Since this thread is already hijacked and about different forms of English -

The part that confuses me is when I look up recipes online because they have ingredients I've never heard of... so I go look them up and turns out it's just something we term differently.

Eg
Skillet - fry pan
ground beef - mince
cilantro - coriander
bell pepper - capsicum
hot pepper - chili
superfine sugar - caster sugar
green onion - spring onion
rutabuga - swede
broil - grill
jelly - jam
jello - jelly
snap peas - snow peas
cookie - biscuit

I could go on forever...

Re: Another Planet fitness thread.

And yet Australia is the only country in the world where "thongs" are worn on the feet :P

well i would not say that.. it is just a perfect example of english being a living language

spelling is important as it frequently indicates the root of the word.. english adopts many words from other languages

Re: Another Planet fitness thread.

Great, now I have to break out my English to English dictionary before I post on here again.

Talk about a thread drift.
