Crossfit for inner city kids?

I'm proposing a session of crossfit based workouts to a inner city program helping inner city kids with self esteem issues, decision making, and long term goal setting. The program already consists of a rope course, hiking, other outdoor related activities. My thought is that physical activity is always good, the long term goal setting is built into Crossfit, and the need to push through mental barriers to really gain success.

Here are my questions:
Is this feasible with no money for equipment? We would be dealing with 30 kids at a time.
Would the lack of immediate success hinder the positive results and actually be counterproductive?
Not being an experienced Crossfitter would a more senior practitioner be interested in helping come up with scaled program for children?

This is in the very beginning stages as I just came up with the idea this afternoon. So there is much more thought needed to put into the presentation but I think it would be a good addition.

Hmm, do a search.

One of the guys on here also does something like this and he got funding from the city for equipment. He'll probably chime in with good advice for you (sorry, names are escaping me at the moment).

As for scaled workouts check out (wfs):

First contact Steve, he will be a good resource. Secondly CrossFit has a kids program, surprisingly called CrossFit Kids. You can find scaled kids workouts posted everyday right off the mainpage at ws/fs I hear the people are friendly and will help you out if you send them an email.

Erik, way to go man! Good luck and keep us informed. Another idea for funding might be your local pro sports teams, which often have foundations to sponsor this type of endeavor. Who nkows you may even get some athlete celebs to participate.

Re: Crossfit for inner city kids?

I was asking similar questions recently. I've been wondering about getting CrossFit in schools since the PE programs in NYC are just not good.

Maybe after school programs would be easier.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to get something like this started in NYC please e-mail me.

Someone told me Coach B has a program in schools in his area. Maybe we can ask him how he did it.

Re: Crossfit for inner city kids?

In NYC, I think the easiest way to start a program in a school is through an afterschool program, such as Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation (wfs)
There are many organizations like this in the city.

Another way would be start a program that is involved in the Marine Physical Fitness competition. My former school, South Bronx HS, has been involved in this competition for two decades and and has won the competition multiple times, and while the actual competition is not quite the crossfit games, it consists of pullups, pushups, and 300 shuttle run, if I remember correctly. Again, this would best be best done through a morning/afterschool program or PE program if you actually worked in the school.

Coach B, I believe, teaches PE.
