I think it allows some variety into the training, and allows some freedom to their training.

We do Open gym from 3 pm to 5 pm M-F and again on Sunday from 10-Noon. People can work any skill or lift they want. Or they can make up missed workouts. Right now it works well for those that have missed one of The Open workouts.

Yes! OG has been incredibly helpful with getting athletes through all the Open workouts given different people's schedules.

We intentionally programmed the Open WOD on Saturday so that people have several opportunities to hit it

Friday during our "Rest Day" split programming (WFS)
During Friday night OG
During the Saturday group classes
Finally, Sunday night OG

That's made it really easy for us to funnel everyone through the Open WODs with minimal interruption to other classes.

thanks for all the positive posts, everyone.

Re: The Benefits of Open Gym Sessions at CrossFit Affiliates

Crossfit gyms are consistently the best-equipped gyms in any given city. It would be ideal for a lifter who knows what they're doing to be able to use box facilities during non-WOD hours, without being required to a) undergo coaching that may have little to offer in terms of practical benefit at that particular phase in their training, or b) join a group schedule that derails a successfully progressing program or that they have no interest in joining.

Now, I understand you can't just let everyone come in and pay to use the gym. There needs to be 'quality control', and we don't need to discuss the obvious reasons why. It's much easier to just not offer OG.

I think it would be reasonable for boxes to hold 'interviews', if you will, for lifters seeking to pay to use the facilities in an open-gym capacity. A thorough-enough assessment to make sure only lifters with good form, knowledge, and gym etiquette are admitted. To make sure their goals are in line with the atmosphere, and that their programs are reasonable. If not, they can join the ramp-up classes.

You could use an easy online sign-up scheduling system. # of people per slot depends on box size and equipment. You sign up for scheduled slots on equipment like squat racks and rings, based on your program's scheduled workout for the day. Don't have a scheduled workout or a program? Sounds like you're not that serious and can probably can just lift at a normal gym.

I dunno, I'm just brainstorming.

We have an open gym from 10am - noon every Sunday. People really appreciate it. It's free, not part of their membership. Those that use it really want to get better at CrossFit, or Oly lifts, or make up lifts or do a workout ( as long as it doesn't interfere with everyone). There is at least one coach there to help out as needed.
