Possible to lose 16.9 lbs and 8.8% fat in 5 weeks?

So there's this person on another board I go to who says he "has" to go from 178.9 lbs and 19.8% body fat to 158 lbs and 11% body fat in 5 weeks. I don't think it's possible. I think he might be able to lose the weight, hell I've done it in less time myself, but I don't think there's any way in hell he can get his body fat down 8.8% in only 5 weeks.

What do you think? Am I way off base?

And for the record, after dropping that weight in 2.5 weeks, I was toast. Completely useless. My team would have been better off if I hadn't dropped the weight and just didn't compete as a lightweight.

So an 18lb fat loss in 5 weeks, 20lb total weight loss? With liposuction, I guess. Otherwise, it is not possible to lose weight this rapidly (ie. cut calories so drastically) and only lose 2lb of muscle.

Re: Possible to lose 16.9 lbs and 8.8% fat in 5 weeks?

I would have to say it might be, because in 6 weeks I lost 20 pounds, and I am still losing about 4 pounds a week in week 8. I went from a crappy diet to strict paleo and it's been falling off. I feel great. I eat meat and veggies until I'm full. I've been blasting through workouts with high energy. I'm getting stronger so I doubt I've lost any muscle. I know the first couple are water weight, but it's still a lot in a short time. Just my two cents.

I'd take the bet that he wouldn't be able to do it, but depending on the amount of money, the guy could work harder and might be able to do it.

If he was going from like 40% bodyfat to 30%, I'd say it's possible. But the fat loss seems slower when you get under 20%. The weight loss is very possible, but the fat % - I'd say no.

Possible ? Yes.
Healthy? No.
Fun? No.
Sustainable? No.

Why? Don't say it's for some beach vacation or some other ego flattery..... make lifestyle changes not short term choices.
Of course your life your choices....good luck.

Total of 20 lb weight loss. Wow! 3500 cals in a pound. 20 lbs x 3500 cals= 70,000 calorie deficit in a 5 week period. First things first, this is unhealthy at best, secondly, if this person wanted to lose 20 lbs total, he or she should have started earlier and not waiting till 5 weeks left.

Re: Possible to lose 16.9 lbs and 8.8% fat in 5 weeks?

Thomas & Ed,

I swear, it's not me! I don't know why this guy is trying to do it. The thread at the other forum has blown up with all kinds of advice, good and bad. I think it scared him away.

When I did it, I was in college and trying to make weight to get into the lightweight boat (I was on the rowing team). I made it (with the clothing allowance...I was wearing socks and my strategically place hands), but when it came time for my race, I was gassed. I did my normal workouts and practices in the 2.5 weeks it took me to get down to my weight and I had zero energy left for competition. I've since learned better, though.

That being said, I've dropped 15 lbs in the last 4 weeks with paleo and working out. I have tons of energy, haven't had ceffeine in I don't know how long, and I'm sleeping a lot better. If I'd had this diet and work ethic in college I actually could have been pretty decent.

I lost close to twenty pounds in three weeks... after a tonsillectomy. Went from 209 to 191 on a diet of water and chicken broth. I am compelled to advise against anything so extreme, it isn't pleasant.
