Damn it! One of my rare cheat snacks is light microwave popcorn.

One of the most widely known compounds made using PFOA is polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), sold under the brand name Teflon by DuPont.

There are current studies underway about the health impacts of teflon. As long as it stays adhered to whatever surface it is coating it's not a problem, but most of these surfaces breakdown over time and enter your food. It's a pretty non-reactive substance (why it works so well as a non-stick), but there are signs it is having some effect. Better quality teflon cookware will not sluff teflon into your food as rapidly. I love teflon so I'm pretty bummed about the possibilities.

I quit using Teflon. I found that a drizzle of oil makes my skillet and wok just as non-stick as the Teflon without any worries of PFOA. It may be a non-issue, but if something else accomplishes the same task, why leave it to chance?

Jiffy pop rules over Microwave popcorn anyday. Just don't burn it.
Plus it's more fun to make. Or an air popper. |

ePTFE or expanded PTFE is also the primary component in GORE-TEX. It's great for fabrics but I'm not sure I want it anywhere near (or in) my food. That being said, PTFE is one of the most inert compounds ever created.
