Any tips on how to avoid bruising your thighs when doing hang snatches, hang cleans and rack pulls?
Is this a technique (bar position) thing, or do I just need to wear sweat pants?

i would bet you are banging the bar on the hips rather than brushing the bar...if your hips go vertical in the jump phase (explosive) then the bar will not bang....if your hips go horizontal in this phase you will bang the bar. concentrate on getting up...straight, like a vertical JUMP...that triple extension that is meant to put momentum and elevation on the bar. the lats come into play just to keep that bar close to the fulcrum (hip) of the lever.....don't bang it, brush it!!

I don't have much of a problem on the way up, mine is when I lower the weight down from overhead.

And sweats don't seem to help me. I have just learned to deal with it, but I would be curious if there was a way to reduce it.

That's exactly what you need to do if you can't drop the weights - Just deal with it. You can soften the drop by catching it on 'springy' legs, but basically you just gotta tough it out.
