What is the difference between front and back squats in terms of strength building ? Do they work the muscles differently ?

Source is Strength Training Anatomy by Frederic Delavier (paraphrased)...(nice reference by the way, if you ignore all the machine based isolation exercise ;))

Front squats primarily hit your quads, but also contracts the glutes, hamstrings, abdominal core, and the erector spinae

Back squats (crossfit vernacular) hit your quads, glutes, abductor group, erector spiane, abdominal muscles, and the hamstrings

So similar exercises that effect a lot of same muscle groups, but front squats hit your quads more heavily than back squats

From a practical standpoint the main difference is in the core/lower back.

Controlling the weight out front is a lot harder and sometimes even when the legs are willing the lower back gives out and you dump one forward.

The differences also depend on how you do your back squats. If you front back squat with a narrow stance and high bar position then the difference front to back will be smaller than if you back squat with the wide stance/low bar PL style.

Simple answer, try some max FSQ/BSQ and feel the difference for yourself

Ooops too many "fronts" and "backs" in one sentence!

Should read

"The differences also depend on how you do your back squats. If you back squat with a narrow stance and high bar position then the difference front to back will be smaller than if you back squat with the wide stance/low bar PL style."
