Question from a friend - Bench Press

Hello everyone,
I am posting here on behalf of a friend who is a football player. He has been playing football since high school and he told me today that his bench press hasn't budged over the past 4 years. It has always been between 285-310. He has tried a few things to increase it but the numbers won't budge. Any advice for the guy?

If you need more info, let me know and I will post it.

Re: Question from a friend - Bench Press

You're probably going to need to post what he has tried that has failed. Hard for others to give advice without that.

Re: Question from a friend - Bench Press

Without knowing anything else about him, I can tell you that gaining weight usually gets the bench press moving.

Re: Question from a friend - Bench Press

What's his nutrition? What's his height & weight? How often does he bench press? How often does he do other lifts & train? What program is he following?

+1 too little information. Training he is doing, height, weight, etc.

Re: Question from a friend - Bench Press

What are the weights for the rest of his big lifts?

If he doesn't know what his squat and deadlift are that's probably a good sign he needs to get onto a more complete strength plan, probably a periodized one.

Re: Question from a friend - Bench Press

if he is a football player that only benches 300lbs then it's safe to assume he's not a lineman, in which case, why does he care about his bench?

only way to help is going to know what his program, diet, supplement, etc look like.

Do you know anything about football? Coaches/scouts care about your bench press no matter what position you play.

Whether a big bench helps you be a better player or not is totally irrelevant to this discussion.

Re: Question from a friend - Bench Press

Here is the info :

6' 2 | 260 lbs

Bench: 285-310 for like the last 4 years
Squat: 460
Deadlift: Around 400
Pullups: 7

What I think weak parts of my upper body are: Deltoids, Lower Triceps, Grip

What I think strong parts of my upper body are: Upper Triceps

"In high school we trained bench, decline bench, or towel bench (just the top half of the motion) 3 times a week. And I did a lot extra. I think back then I might have overworked the chest, to the point that I never was able to recover, so I didn't get stronger.

In college, we train regular bench, chain bench, or bench press with weights AND resistance bands twice a week. Since college we've focused a lot on shrugs, grip work, and pullups. I came into college not being able to do 1 pullup, now can do 7.
