What about someone who wasn't interested in being an elite weightlifter but just a generally strong and athletic person. Take a strongman competitor for example. Would the upright torso and deeper positioin still be preferable?

Matt,

For being generally strong and athletic.... take your pick! You know what my opinion is, i prefer the HB squat, but im certainly not dogmatic on it unless you are talking about OLers. 99% of it is squatting on a good program and making progress on whichever variation you choose. Also realize that you are not operating in a vacuum here... If you are trying to be overall strong and athletic, you are also probably doing front squats, deadlifts, cleans, and maybe (hopefully!) snatches... so your pretty much covered! You simply cant do those exercises and not cover all the relevant muscles adequately! Thats my opinion, anyway.
