They do get paid, just not very much.
this is the age old question but the NFL hits much harder than rugby, even with all the padding the NFL (and football in general) still has consistent problems with paralysis, concussion, severe injury, and even death.

rugby is more fluid and there isn't the type of gear up prior to every play like a back starting 10 yards shy of the line so he's running full bore into a pack of 300 lb men.
