How to scale, if my focus is gaining strength?

I have a question about heavy fran or any other WOD actually. If i know i can not do the prescribed weight for the number or reps. Would it be more beneficial to me to lower the weight and do the total number of reps? Or should i keep the weight and lower the amount of reps?
