Scored some free plates, should they be dropped?

I acquired these plates (25#, 35#, and 45#) when our school upgraded the weightroom. They have rubber around the edges. My question is: should this type of plate be dropped? I would be dropping them on stall mats. They're not like bumper plates I'm familiar with, but they do resemble the plates used by olympic lifters. I'd like to avoid bending or breaking my bar.

$#!^ wrong section . Mods please move this.

Re: Scored some free plates, should they be dropped?

I used to own a set of Hamptons like that along with a $65 chinese barbell. I'd say they are worth a little more than you paid for them, but not a whole bunch more. Fine for getting started.

They are true bumper plates, but the design implemented poorly. The problem with them is that the hubs aren't very thick. They wobble and dropping them will tend to scratch up the sleeve of the bar because they won't land square. This is especially true with the 24 lb. bumpers. I dropped them quite a bit, never had anything actually break.

The paint also flaked off, especially the yellow. I had little yellow paint flakes all over the gym. Between the flaking and the wobbling and the scratched up bar I eventually tired of the Hamptons. I sold the whole setup and got an Eleiko set.
