Anyone ever tried turning a normal desk into a stand-up desk?

Anyone ever tried turning a normal desk into a stand-up desk? Sitting is killing my flexibility = sciatica pain from an old Navy injury. 12.5" x (22-25") x (22-30") and solid enough to support a fairly heavy iMac. Guess I might just go down to the hardware store and figure out how to build one.

Posting here since I don't know the perfect subforum for this, and just to see if someone else has come up with a better solution before me. I'm stuck in a dorm for 2 more months of training, so can't really throw out furniture or make permanent modifications.

Re: Anyone ever tried turning a normal desk into a stand-up desk?

I used a $5 Ikea shoe rack, on top of my desk. It was perfect for the laptop. Tried to spend it at 50% of the day standing. Set up has changed recently (office became a nursery). My new set up is a computer armoire, however, I just put the laptop on top of it for half the day now. Just keep it simple.

Cinder blocks. Elevate the whole desk. Less than $15.

Re: Anyone ever tried turning a normal desk into a stand-up desk?

I bought two pieces of cedar fence planking (1/2" x 5" x 6' or so), stacked reams of paper under each end until it was the right to raise my monitor, and done! A 1'x6' shelf to put things on at the perfect custom height. (reams of paper were 'borrowed' from the supply room)

You can easily do the same, and this gives you the benefit of a shelf under your new, taller desk.

And cedar smells good

I just put my laptop on top of a filing cabinet on my desk and it does the trick. Been during this for about 8 months now and noticed improved posture and less shoulder pain.
