Last night I thought I'd try some tabata DB thrusters. I used 20lb dumbells, and got a score of 7, total reps 61.

By the end of the last interval I was stuffed. Collapsed in a pool of sweat, lungs heaving, shoulders and legs burning. No more than 15 minutes later, my breathing was back to normal, as far as I could tell, and my heart rate wasn't all that elevated. My shoulders and legs still burned though.

Should I have gone for a lighter weight to get more reps done for a higher aerobic demand? Am I cheating myself on tabatas somehow? Can my metabolism be elevated without a significant increase in breathing/heart rate?

My answers to your three questions:

1) I would say you induced plenty of aerobic demand, based on your presentation right after the tabatas. Depending on your limiting factor in this particular exercise (ie. shoulders or arms?) would help to determine whether the weight should be changed IMO.

2) Not from your description, you're not cheating yourself at all!

3) Did you actually measure your HR? As we get more fit, our recovery becomes faster and more "complete". For example, in the three very hilly bike rides I've made to my parents' house in the last month, after the last one my mom commented on how I was recovering more quickly than I did on the first one. I was feeling that as well. I'd bet your HR was still around 100, which to a CFer is nothing.
