Re: cant do a pullup

Back in my globo days, I got my first pull-up mid cutting a lot of pounds, by starting with chin-ups (which are a little easier, but once you get a few, it's easy to switch)

1) doing assisted chin-ups and progressively reducing the weight
2) a few times a day just going for the bar and getting up as high as I could, unassisted, for one rep.
3) doing this in the course of dropping a lot of weight.

Eventually #2 got me over the bar, and the rest wasn't so bad.

But #3 is also the most important. With these kind of BW exercises, dropping BW can make a huge huge difference. (Even one of my coaches, who is a total beast who does **** like 135# barbell TGUs says his muscleups get messed up when he adds a few pounds.)

(Of course, my pull-ups still kinda suck, I don't have more than five strict, but that's more than zero...)

Re: cant do a pullup

Pshaw! Pullups are easy!
Just joking. I consider myself fairly fit( not elite, but pretty good) and can only do 8 strict deadhang pullups. They do take lots of work. A word to the wise- learn strict pullups before you ever try kipping or butterfly. Trust me.

Re: cant do a pullup

Recently got my girlfriend her first chin-up. The key was varying intensities, and trying to do one every so often (for her, before each workout I had her attempt one)

The first time she tried one she grabbed the bar and couldn't budge. So I had her use 2 different bands. My lightest band she could do 2-3 reps, the medium band she could do 5-7 reps. I had her work pull-ups twice a week, and also worked partial reps. I had her stand on a stool and pull. Eventually she was able to get a rep starting from mid-way up. The toughest part for her was (and still is) the bottom. Also did negatives, and did (and still do) jumping pull-ups.

After about 3 months of persistance, she got a legit dead hang chin-up. She can still do it (most of the time) but not consistantly. She was able to get 5-7 reps with the lightest band, and 9-10 with the medium band.

Interesting, I've heard others say the same thing. For me, it's the last 1/4 at the top. With a bit knee movement (not a kip at all) I can get my nose over the bar. Dead-hang, only 3/4 (to my eyes) is all I can do. But that's more than before so I'm making progress.

Gotta stick with it.

Re: cant do a pullup

I started with bands and also jumping pull-ups.
How I did it was I got to where I could do 10 with a band (med band) then that equaled about 1 pull-up. I also used the grease the groove method.

Hope this helps.

Re: cant do a pullup

You may already have a plan for improving pull-ups, but this caught my eye since I have struggled with them too. I found this site and he has great progression tips on pull-ups and other gymnastic moves. I thought it was interesting and sent it to Tim, who helps me with my scheduling. I have seen a major improvement in the few weeks I've been following the plan. Any way, it;s just my 2cents. Here is the link if you want to check it out. Best of Luck to you and me

where are you hands placed? Have you played around with that and moved them out a bit if they are narrow?
