I was wondering what others' experience on using coconut oil on a CLC diet has been. In "Metabolic Diet", DiPasquale cautions against it, saying that because the MCTs are metabolized differently, they can interfere with the up reguation of lipid metabolism. That said, I can't find any other CLC proponent that says not to use coconut oil. Does anyone have any further insight into this?

Cheers,
Matt

I think DiPasquale's opinion on coconut oil is complete speculation. His theory is that since MCT's are metabolized extremely efficiently (I believe they don't require the use of a carrier molecule, unlike most other fatty acids) that the body will lose some of it's ability to efficiently burn other fatty acids. In a way, the cells become "lazy" at burning other fatty acids because of the consumption of this convenience fuel (MCT). It sounds good in theory, but I've honestly never read any actual research that indicated that this was true. I personally see no problem with using decent quantities of coconut oil, however, I wouldn't rely solely on CO as your fat source just because it will limit your range of nutrients from other fatty foods. Maybe someone else could chime in with some studies that they know of.

Matthew-
Tough to add to Greg's answer. I;ve tinkered on and off for years with CLC and use coconut oil/milk pretty regularly and have never noticed say a lag in energy when I was not using coconut. Should be fine.
