I've been taking health grade fish oil twice a day for the last week or so, with no ill effects.

Yesterday some pharmaceutical grade fish oil arrived and I took 4 capsules at once. I felt a bit weird that afternoon, I can't really describe it better than that, I just didn't feel like myself.

So this morning I cut down the dose to 3 caspules, then after lunch I started to get some cramps. I can't remember when I last got cramps like this.

I guess I know the answer to my question, but I would be interested to know if other people have had similar experiences.

Apparently, they are 1000mg capsules.

Three grams should be no big deal (should be), 3g at once may be a large load though. Spread it throughout the day, you'll get used to it.

I tried the Kirkland brand capsules from Costco and my body did NOT like them.

The liquid from Carlson is much better to me.

I take at least 10 to 15 of 1g softgel caps throughout the day. I take 3 or 4 with my vitamins in the morning, after lunch, after dinner and before bed. I take the higher amount when I do not eat tuna or fish that day.

There has been a lot of discussion about the optimal amount needed and it was my understand 10 - 20 grams per day was it.

I had a similar experience with the fish oil caplets my wife bought a couple months ago....I think she got them at Whole Foods, though I don't know the brand. Anyhow...I took 4 of them in the morning, and felt nasty throughout the day (also had an off fishyness to me too)...so I stayed off them until last week. I took 4 again (not remembering what happened a couple weeks before) and felt awful again...I'm going to wait another week and take 8, just to see what happens

I keep the bottle at home, and take one or two before work. I also have a ziploc bag at work, and will pop one every hour or so. Never more than 2 at a time.

GTG works for pu's, why not fish oil?

Pop one of the caps. Smell the oil inside. If it smells very fishy and rancid it's probably off and that may have caused the stomach upset. In gereral it is both cheaper and better ( no filler, gelatine, easier to check if it's off) than caps. That said teh caps are much handier and for some, less offensive to take.

I started taking a very high volume... 15 or so a day. When that caused problems, I tried to go down to 8 or so, split up over the day. Still had GI issues.

So I get my 5g of long-chain fatty acids from Carlson brand now.
