You'd never be lying on your back with the need to push up a lot of weight off your chest - it just doesn't happen in real life. Then again, you'd never by lying on your stomach with the need to push a lot of weight off your back. However, we cannot neglect lying on your side with the need to push a lot of weight of your other side, because that wouldn't be constantly varied.

i am a big fan of benching, but i think the reason crossfit has never really focused on it has alot to do with the concept of guys doing the workouts in their garages alone. just a guess.

I don't. I think it's because Crossfit prides itself on being contrarian.

Given the prevalence of injury-inducing movements generally, I'm not so sure about that. While it's true that 200 GHD situps won't crush you like a failed bench will, they are pretty likely to put you in the hospital.
