Ankle "pinching" pain during ankle flexion

I have had this issue with my ankle for some time now, but it was never really been bothersome, but lately I have been trying to increase the flexibility in my lower legs and have been trying to stretch my calves.

While trying to stretch the calves (usually on a calf stretching block or a stair), I get a sharp, pinching pain in the front of my right ankle (feels like where the tibia articulates with the talus), especially when I do the stretch with a bent knee (theoretically to isolate the soleus).

Any suggestions on pain generators/causes for mobility issues and treatment of such issues would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Ankle "pinching" pain during ankle flexion

Did you sprain your ankle or irritate that area in the past?

If so, if you didn't do proper mobility and stretching after the injury was healing up then usually the bony areas tend to overcalcify. This leaves you with a lack of mobility there short of having the bone shaved down.

Not much you can do about it. I have the same thing in my left ankle... get as much flexibility as you can out of it and maintain it.

Don't try to bother getting more because stretching it into impingement is only going to make it worse.

Well I really hope you are wrong about bone spurs because that would really suck.

I have indeed sprained my ankle a number of times and didn't do much rehab.

What do you think about tight soleus, gastrocs, peroneals, etc being the culprit from being excessively tight and pulling the tarsals up into the tibia? My right calf muscles are super tight with lots of trigger points

If you can't manually stretch them (and yes, I have same problem) then you're giong to have to go after them with your hands or with a foam roller or other implements like that.

I use golf balls if you're wondering. Hurts really bad but helps

Also, dose up on the fish oil if your ankle gets aggravated.
